<br />
Not a lot has happened on this blog for several years but the garden is still going strong.<br />
<br />
A new website is coming soon...Yorkshire Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12427046626451896214noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3154859580763229496.post-48859258237315945572014-01-25T05:25:00.002-08:002014-01-25T05:25:52.212-08:00Early 2014 Garden update.Well so far winter has been very mild and also very wet! This has been good for the frost tender plants (I still have Aeoniums outside) but not good for me gardening. I have started on the raised beds with I am constructing out of 8 foot long new railway sleepers. Carrying them on slippy mud is tricky to say the least. So here are a couple of videos to show how it is all progressing.<br />
<br />

<br />
This week I have created a raised bed to plant my large Jubaea palm in. I have also planted a few Trachycarpus princeps and a T Manipur in this bed. This video shows the whole process.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/vPXeMCquAlE?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is how the Jubaea bed fits in with the rest of the garden as shown in this rough sketch</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTTGoDb-HnjtQRInZQTjkTBB45ddVwVc6HOSfP18V_MFScCyAH5oUKyjZejDrfyQgh46IM3g0QqvcThsh2cE8fhpxaXP-LkJ0l0gsUB0OnkATr5M6zyzgOcX6jhp640SPwi6jj1UbAHDZI/s960/1004748_377516539016825_1748148338_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTTGoDb-HnjtQRInZQTjkTBB45ddVwVc6HOSfP18V_MFScCyAH5oUKyjZejDrfyQgh46IM3g0QqvcThsh2cE8fhpxaXP-LkJ0l0gsUB0OnkATr5M6zyzgOcX6jhp640SPwi6jj1UbAHDZI/s640/1004748_377516539016825_1748148338_n.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can see there is lot to get on with! Hopefully within the next three years the main structural elements of the garden will be in place.</div>

It's been several months since I last blogged. This is partly due to giving up the internet for lent and partly due to the fact I've moved house and done some proper renovation!<br />
I have decided to mainly do a video blog from now on as I don't have the time to fit everything in plus video updates give a real insight into what I'm doing. <br />
<br />
First off here is my new garden back in February when I had just got the keys to the property.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/82kiFz4VZrQ?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you will have seen I've got a lot of work to do. The ground is very heavy clay and gets very wet and sticky in winter so I will need to create a lot of raised beds in order to plant my palms and other exotic plants in. Since the video was made I have mainly been clearing away all the rubbish, removing the larger greenhouse, burning the sheds, cutting down the tops of conifers and basically getting back to basics. I have planted two palms; a Butia in the back garden in a raised area and a large Trachycarpus fortunei in the front garden. This next video shows this as well as me moving all my big plants!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/dZT0zoxaO2c?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hope you enjoyed the above video!:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next stage will be to dig over the soil and continue to remove all the rubbish (old flags, concrete etc) not the most exciting or glamorous jobs, but they have to be done!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<h2 class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A Norfolk exotic adventure PART ONE EAST RUSHTON OLD VICARAGE</h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I seems like for ever-ago but it was only four months ago that I was sunning myself in Norfolk surrounded by a whole host of exotic plants. I visited many places: Amulree and Urban Jungle exotic nurseries, Will Giles Exotic Garden, NGS open garden owned by Kevin Scales and East Rushton Old Vicarage. The latter of which I will talk about in this blog. The previous will be blogged about soon....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I had been told that East Rushton was a bit of a hidden gem and a must-see place if one is interested in "unusual" and "exotic" plants. As I am always interested in seeing any gardens, especially those that are exotic I couldn't resist. I wasn't alone on my journey through Norfolk, having my pregnant wife and two little girls with me. Every time we visit a garden I say to them, "Our garden will be like this one day" they smile and say will it have a trampoline too? There were no trampolines at the Old Vicarage but plenty of space to play in and lots of exotics for me to get excited about.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the start of the garden is a very interesting plant sales area with many choice plants at fair prices. I resisted having spent up at the tropical nurseries... Tropical and exotic plants were everywhere including these wonderful Brugmansias which had a lovely perfume and sun-yellow colour on the flowers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBQU3BasUEL-kR0J0W3h4DyNLtAJ0lSjrAudbF5UkuFR5kL5K9Pn10NXqiXg19ucWB-w7dFRW7h1sz1FsFPU_qz6t-o5lRsISzITjw9OZ5kY76MxPk6fHgPyCHkSdKmb_vvOY90-U2u8ZU/s1600/DSC_0053August+2012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBQU3BasUEL-kR0J0W3h4DyNLtAJ0lSjrAudbF5UkuFR5kL5K9Pn10NXqiXg19ucWB-w7dFRW7h1sz1FsFPU_qz6t-o5lRsISzITjw9OZ5kY76MxPk6fHgPyCHkSdKmb_vvOY90-U2u8ZU/s640/DSC_0053August+2012.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
There are many brick walls at the Old Vicarage which retain a lot of heat and provide some protection from the elements. In one of the first areas that one comes across is this mixture of arid and prairie planting. Chamaerops humilis palms, Aeoniums amd Eucomis were the highlights of this section for me. All interplanted with various silver-leaved plants ideally suited to the hot dry conditions.</div>

In the same spot as above but facing the opposite way was a large Tetrapanax papyrifer which was easily 10ft tall. The Inula daisies were also large, standing at around 6ft.</div>

Now on to what I think is the best part of the garden and probably one of favourite areas of planting I've ever visited; the "Desert Wash" A huge amount of labour must have been employed to move tonnes of rock, flints and boulders to create a wonderful arid garden that I could only dream about creating "Up North" Notice the clear blue skies (yes this was 2012!)</div>

There are many more areas to explore including some fantastic large-flowered Hydrangeas along with more conventional plantings. I would urge anyone in the area to visit, but before you do check out the website. Opening times and details of the gardens including a plan can be found here: <a href="http://www.e-ruston-oldvicaragegardens.co.uk/pages/view/587/opening-times.htm">http://www.e-ruston-oldvicaragegardens.co.uk/pages/view/587/opening-times.htm</a></div>

Next up the next stage of my Norfolk exotic adventure.</div>

(The same effect can be seen on Fatsias.)<br />
<br />
This short (by my standards :) ) video demonstrates the effect of sub zero temps on evergreen exotic plants such as echiums and Fatsias. The basic method is that the plant removes water from the cells in its leaves and transports the water to the main stem where it can expand and doesn't cause any damage. There is a limit of course which in the case of echiums is around minus 5 and Fatsia around minus 15ish.The effect on the plant during the time when the water is removed from the leaves is the same as when the plant is dehydrated from the lack of water/wilting.<br />

Yorkshire Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12427046626451896214noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3154859580763229496.post-80781306943505586512012-12-04T13:00:00.001-08:002012-12-04T13:28:51.462-08:00Digging up a Yucca and other exotics.<div style="text-align: justify;">
As revealed in my last blog (via a you tube video) I am moving! This means I want to take all my exotic plants with me to create a much bigger garden in the future. The good news is that I've sold my house, the not so good news is that I don't have a new house to go to..... The timing of the move is not ideal for exotic and tropical plants as it will be the middle of winter (January) and therefore snow/frost and rain could be a major headache. Digging plants up in winter may be fine for standard trees and shrubs but not exotics! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The good thing is that 80-90% of my plants are already growing in containers so I only have around 30-40 plants to actually dig up.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here is a large Yucca that is bone hardy and had been growing really well in my front arid bed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZnm4_8qXuxfvYchWUk0iZBLsCwPhnXdrcZQmHijanaZ10WMO2A5-HRKSyD7UOfXjYPKory4DXbwZEKm0Bz3InpcXnB0yXbUQDaRQf5CJNgElwdAfHqa3_5OzIbYp8QxDHmz4JVhTesxX/s1600/dig+up1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZnm4_8qXuxfvYchWUk0iZBLsCwPhnXdrcZQmHijanaZ10WMO2A5-HRKSyD7UOfXjYPKory4DXbwZEKm0Bz3InpcXnB0yXbUQDaRQf5CJNgElwdAfHqa3_5OzIbYp8QxDHmz4JVhTesxX/s320/dig+up1.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZnm4_8qXuxfvYchWUk0iZBLsCwPhnXdrcZQmHijanaZ10WMO2A5-HRKSyD7UOfXjYPKory4DXbwZEKm0Bz3InpcXnB0yXbUQDaRQf5CJNgElwdAfHqa3_5OzIbYp8QxDHmz4JVhTesxX/s1600/dig+up1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first stage was to cut away the lower leaves so I could get in there and dig it up. I also chopped the tips off to stop me getting stabbed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgddN1G5W4cDeM1LALsKjOs6OtYLnWMHnkl94sY0rYOtSpel8HUNa61xOp6wEj9dPyVYk_cUCoDtmK4S-qtQ4eSIywgu6MK7zrBRA9-sIw0vgSivyW5ZzKidxeW-mY5G1n0Y6r0omBSs7ZA/s1600/dig+up2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgddN1G5W4cDeM1LALsKjOs6OtYLnWMHnkl94sY0rYOtSpel8HUNa61xOp6wEj9dPyVYk_cUCoDtmK4S-qtQ4eSIywgu6MK7zrBRA9-sIw0vgSivyW5ZzKidxeW-mY5G1n0Y6r0omBSs7ZA/s320/dig+up2.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The next stage was to dig around the plant with a spade then sever all the roots in order to lift it out of the ground.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2L2Oq5p5zXi59naCvYjOy7VTBiTF6m17Rhf_i2vvOJrslSmAEyyiwssmAPIs-hFQLnPrQoanyIoon0wC4Dawzb2gFmOnjx96WzmgMZGKl-TX-hA-haR1lMxPZ9XXQ1a8KYBJ4QLAN7Mhn/s1600/dig+up3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2L2Oq5p5zXi59naCvYjOy7VTBiTF6m17Rhf_i2vvOJrslSmAEyyiwssmAPIs-hFQLnPrQoanyIoon0wC4Dawzb2gFmOnjx96WzmgMZGKl-TX-hA-haR1lMxPZ9XXQ1a8KYBJ4QLAN7Mhn/s320/dig+up3.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The roots were very easy to chop through as they were not woody but very fleshy, like cutting through Dahlia tubers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2oQ-2wKGYR7gn6FlVDyYZd0gc49G1f3EGToi3X4EtHmoaXT1Ca2RayDt0BKHCaTls4QscZCUFKtWb16SLOKJO9pxXgDB5so8vwt0RjLzEcReu04-rWTg5RfGJi-ez4NKO7Iq8i8XNJxYl/s1600/dig+up4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2oQ-2wKGYR7gn6FlVDyYZd0gc49G1f3EGToi3X4EtHmoaXT1Ca2RayDt0BKHCaTls4QscZCUFKtWb16SLOKJO9pxXgDB5so8vwt0RjLzEcReu04-rWTg5RfGJi-ez4NKO7Iq8i8XNJxYl/s320/dig+up4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Finally the plant was lifted out and loosly potted into a suitable container and left outside without watering as the ground was moist and rain was expected.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU7uJ_d1JC0z1uIzgOsBD5F9KnSuYW1kMhX4BlOER1p3Pj_TEM_qn46rOTo3DDLAL_4gwzOTXJVvRLuYvsUpQhyphenhyphen3rlv0bL7ptdhN1x-r1Te8MUASXP5iM_i7biSNR_TuKtmZxX10ODooAP/s1600/dig+up5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU7uJ_d1JC0z1uIzgOsBD5F9KnSuYW1kMhX4BlOER1p3Pj_TEM_qn46rOTo3DDLAL_4gwzOTXJVvRLuYvsUpQhyphenhyphen3rlv0bL7ptdhN1x-r1Te8MUASXP5iM_i7biSNR_TuKtmZxX10ODooAP/s320/dig+up5.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I also cleared my main exotic bed (as show in the last few seconds of this video <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkxFPP1yErc&feature=autoplay&list=UUFa7yNZ1pfVM1IZrt0ERSIA&playnext=1">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkxFPP1yErc&feature=autoplay&list=UUFa7yNZ1pfVM1IZrt0ERSIA&playnext=1</a> )</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Other arids in the front bed included a Dasyliron, Aloe polyphylla, opuntia and echeveria.</div>

The Musa basjoo were simply dug up and rather awkwardly plonked into a large tub and dragged into the garage for protection.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For the large T rex I had to chop off all its large leaves and sever the extensive root system. Which will cause it to pup profusely next year....</div>

<br />
Ok lets introduce my latest and most demanding video to date. This is a full seasons growth of my main tropical bed from April to the November. Over 20,000 photos were taken to make this 10 minute film. It shows palms, colocasia, dahlias, grasses, gingers etc. <br />
<br />
There are points in the film were the wind movement makes it hard to see the growth but at other times it's still and every thing can be seen pushing upwards.<br />
<br />
There is a LOT to keep your eyes on in this film as plants grow at varying rates so you might have to watch bits many times over. <br />
<br />
Flowers come and go and there is a surprise ending........<br />
<br />
Anyway let me know what you think, please watch in HD for the full effect!<br />
<br />

Life is getting very hectic at the moment but I've still found time to revist RHS Harlow Carr, Harrogate. It's not really the place to see a wide range of exotic and certainly not tropical plants, but there are a few hidden gems. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is a nice area showing garden styles through the ages, including a vivid, purple-walled modern garden with ferns and a chunky Trachycarpus fortunei. (Unfortunately is was chucking it down and therefore too wet to get the camera out) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are some good sized Gunneras and bamboo at Harlow Carr as well as some nice Dawn Redwoods</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Sasa bamboo by the waterside on a very wet day</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW9.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
But the the real gems can be found in the relatively new Alpine house which is totally unheated and well ventilated. Below are a few of the treasures that I found.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A very small specimen</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Here's a nice yellow edged variety</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Maybe I can tempt you with this beauty? These Aciphyllas are evergreen, frost-hardy plants from New Zealand. They are also very spikey so not good for bordering paths or near children.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now for a very beautiful plant, Saxifraga longifolia which produces rossettes up to 20 cm across.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And finally a plant I no nothing about but it looks rather bizzare and interesting so I thought I would take it's picture</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/HARLOW1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
SO it's worth visiting your local gardens, even if you think it's full of "run of the mill" plantsvas there's always a few hidden gems. The Saxifraga longifolia is one that I will grow in the future.</div>

I still have one large colourful border of tropicals but the rest of the garden has been put to bed for winter. The ensetes have been dug up as have the alocasias. Palms have also been brought into the garage as shown here...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/4TGQrlDZFrU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The summer bedding is past it's best but the dahlias are still putting on a fine show. The next jobs will be to mulch the remaining colocasias and wrap up the musa basjoo. I just need a few days to recover!<br />
<br />
Next time, a far more sunnier blog post I promise!Yorkshire Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12427046626451896214noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3154859580763229496.post-66093385995739101602012-09-20T11:00:00.000-07:002012-12-06T13:17:41.985-08:00Kew in a blur. Time to see what all the fuss was about.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Ok to begin with an apology. Three quarters of the photos in this blog post are out of focus or soft focus. This is because, unbeknown to me, my daughters had been playing with the settings on the camera and smeared mucky fingers on the lens! (Lesson always check your equipment before going out) Luckily I noticed by the time I got to the big Jubaea palm so there are at least a few good photos.<br />
<br />
This was my first trip to Kew Gardens and the journey there was very straight forward, taking less than 3 hours from Wakefield, West Yorkshire to the Kew Gardens ticket office using public transport.<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong>View of the Temperate house, one of three large glasshouses at Kew </strong><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember12_zpse1e64a48.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember12_zpse1e64a48.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The main reason I wanted to visit Kew gardens was to see "the largest plant in captivity" this is the famous Jubaea palm Raised from seed in 1846, it is widely believed to be the tallest glasshouse plant and is certainly the largest palm under glass. More on that later.....<br />
<br />
<br />
First here are some images from the plants growing outdoors at Kew including some Trachycarpus palms and many bamboos.<br />
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They have built a very high platform to see the gardens from above. The structures themselves are very impressive. Unfortunately for me the lift was out of order so had to use the stairs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The views from the top were very impressive although not good if you suffer from vertigo!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember10_zps092d2c9a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember10_zps092d2c9a.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Kew is full of fantastic structures, some old and some new. Here is a great example, the Pagoda. One thing that did spoil Kew was the constant sight of loud planes which at times spoiled the relaxing feel of the gardens.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember31_zps2fbe9c18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember31_zps2fbe9c18.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Not all palms are inside at Kew, there are some fortunei, chammys and a couple of Jubaeas including this specimen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember30_zps4b8e783b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember30_zps4b8e783b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Most of the really impressive plants are found in the three main glasses houses. Feast your eyes on these.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Now the above is only a small snippet of what Kew has to offer. I did take many photos of the famous cycads but these were too blurry to post. :-(<br />
<br />
<br />
The main reason I went to Kew was to see the Jubaea as its world famous and wanted to know what my small Jubaea will look like in a 100 years time!<br />
<br />
It's found in the temperate house and has grown to such a height that the crown of the plant is squashing against the top of the glass house. There is some debate as to how long it will remain before it has to be cut down and removed. These are the photos I took of this magnificent palm.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember14_zps69b3c384.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg512/Yorkshire_Kris/KEWseptember14_zps69b3c384.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So it's September, the best month of the year! The weather is still warm and settled although the nights are drawing in. The garden is at it's peak, having had all summer to grow (even in this, one of the worst summers on record!) So even in the chilly north of England in a rather dull and poor year for growing plants, many things have done well. Here is a tour of my garden in photos, hope you enjoy and if you have any questions then please ask! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is one of the most reliable gingers available, H forrestii, spidery flowers with a very delicate scent. Although I grow it in a pot it is pretty hardy as far as I am aware.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/9820/gardenseptember1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/9820/gardenseptember1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is one of my favourite plants, Lobelia cardinalis with Arundo behind. Strong red flowers really hit you in the face and scream exotic. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/796/gardenseptember2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/796/gardenseptember2.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a shot of the shady, wet part of the garden with fatsias, tree ferns and a rather nice cactus still dahlia which was left in the ground from last year.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/3568/gardenseptember3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/3568/gardenseptember3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To the front and side of the garage is my alocasia bed with portora to the left, Mayan Mask in the centre and gageana to the right. The tall ensete banana is montbelliardii. The Phormium is making a recovery in the foreground.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/6246/gardenseptember4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/6246/gardenseptember4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My main bed with a mixture of bananas, grasses, colocasia and dahlias. Good growth in August after a very very slow start. The banana in the background, top right is called hiniba.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5938/gardenseptember5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5938/gardenseptember5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is my might Tetrapanax "rex" It has been totally hardy, not losing the growth point in the 3 seasons that I've had it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So far I have had mixed success. Some good bits and some so-so bits. I have been posting everything on my you tube channel.<br />
<br />
Here is the best one from spring.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is a Eucomis growing and flowering. Lots out for the Painted Ladies...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/UN2ZNAOqTSs?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally a film about my Tree lilies followed by a timelapse sequence showing the flowers opening up....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/dNPLN234WK8?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oh almost forgot, here are the best of my summer flowers...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Yorkshire Krishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12427046626451896214noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3154859580763229496.post-56456074216134989412012-08-29T13:05:00.001-07:002012-12-06T13:18:31.908-08:00How many types of trachycarpus? I say just a few....After a beautiful day yesterday it has been constant rain today,struggling to reach 15 degrees. The palms don't seem to mind and I took a brief respite in the deluge to snap some various Trachycarpus leaves. I have many species with only two of any notable size.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>fortunei (plus waggys)</li>
<li>princeps</li>
<li>manipur</li>
<li>oreophilus</li>
<li>takil</li>
<li>nanus</li>
<li>geminisectus</li>
<li>martianus</li>
<li>latisectus</li>
<li>nova</li>
<li>nova x princeps?</li>
</ul>
<br />
This first image is of a regular fortunei, the mongrel of the family. It was bought as a half dead, battered plant found at the back of a garden centre. It only had three leaves and I felt sorry for it. Five years later and it looks half decent with a nice blue cast to the undersides of the new leaves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/2369/trachys1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/2369/trachys1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This next image is of an oreophilus, mountain trachycarpus from Thailand. Not really hardy in my location but I'm going to give it a good go. Very fine leaflets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/9316/trachys3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/9316/trachys3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a latisectus, apparently survived -10 in the UK but with some protection. Broad leaflets and a lighter green leaf.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6832/trachys6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6832/trachys6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is an emerging princeps leaf and in my opinion the most beautiful Trachycarpus known to man. Again proved hardy in the UK to minus 10 and perhaps even lower with protection?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/708/trachys4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/708/trachys4.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is geminisectus, a pretty rare type of trachycarpus with wide leaflets. My specimens are only seedlings but already have wide leaflets and very, very green leaves!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/38/trachys9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/38/trachys9.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next is manipur which for me is a very slow grower! Only one new leaf this year. The leaves cover an area of less than 100 degrees (ish) and quite distinctive with long floppy leaflets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/7/trachys8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/7/trachys8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally here is another fortunei but looks a bit like a nova with pale whitish undersides to the newest leaves and a tapering trunk and long petioles. This is the newest leaf, they quickly become very floppy and susceptible to wind damage.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

Some would argue all the above are distinct species whilst others would argue they are all variations of a couple of real species: distinct populations with defining characteristics but can produce viable young with other types (and hence the same species). Whatever is the truth they are an interesting and vital group of plants for the hardy, exotic garden and I for one wouldn't be without them. </div>

I have a lot of good stuff to post but very little time to blog! <br />
So in the mean time here are some photos of my main border from April right up to today. As you can see, despite the poor summer the plants have grown fairly well.<br />

The ferns and Gunnera has loved it but the arids and summer bedding have just sulked. Even the Colocasias, gingers, and bananas have not liked it that much because the weather has been so cool that all the moisture has not been put to much use. Palms have seen the dreaded "spotting" especially on Chammys and butias but also trachy seedlings. Anyway enough of this gloom, toay has been the longest day of the year and it managed exactly 10 minutes of nice sunny weather! (so I quickly took this images!!) The ret of the daty was cold, wet and FOGGY!<br />
<br />
Anyway here are some quick snaps from various angles. Still have quite a bit to plant out......<br />

March had a brief nice warm spell but April and May have been very cold and very wet. The shady area of my garden has not minded one bit as its a mixture of ferns, fatsias, gunnera and some natives. As its been a quiet time so far in the garden I have been trying to film plants growing by creating timelapse films. (more of this later). But now the weather is showing signs of warming up its goings to get very very busy with hardening off plants and planting out annual bedding etc. I digress, back to the shady corner. Here I have plonked lots of potted plants in between the planted ones to give a new look for ths season.<br />
<br />

Putting this skill to good use I scaled the Tropical Biome to take these photos. They were taken from 50m above ground level (thats 150ish feet in old money) The temperature in the Biome ranges from 18-30 degrees C and as hot ar rises I can assure you it was at least 30 degrees where I was! <br />
<br />
Anyway enjoy the views looking down on 20metre tall trees!<br />

The green house was full and no more plants were allowed in the house. Anyone else have this problem? To make sure all my tender plants survived winter I enlisted the help of some relatives to store some plants in their houses. My mum was to take care of my Aeoniums. I have checked on them 3 or 4 times since October and today I got a nice surprise.....one had flowered! My mother has done a great job or not over watering the plants and put up with the constant stream of dead leaves falling on to the carpet.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is the first flower on an Aeonium for me and although not the most amazing blooms, they are nevertheless a cheery site on an otherwise benign day.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Each leaf has white flecks, patches and veins. I only have one plant but each leaf is different. Here are some photos taken of it today.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1425/gardenfeb201223.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1425/gardenfeb201223.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The plant is grown in partial shade which keeps the green parts of the leaf nice and dark and prevents the white parts from burning in the sun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Some are even all white!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
